The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as 17 Global Goals, were made last September 2015 by world leaders during the UN Summit as a first step for tackling a call to end poverty, protect the planet and promoting that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.
The 17 global goals, with their 169 targets, are part of what is known as the 2030 Agenda, a plan for action. The goals are all interconnected and universal which means that they apply to all countries around the world, not just poor countries. All are interconnected goals, for instance, improving people's welfare and achieving gender equality will lead to poverty alleviation and promoting a peaceful and inclusive society will reduce inequality.
SDGs are global goals addressing global issues affecting the humanities. If stakeholders will play their part in finding shared solution, SDGs will be a great opportunity to improve the lives of the people and their future children. With the pledge of 2030 Agenda and its SDGs, Leaving No One Behind, it reminds us that everything will be possible through the collaboration of people around the world and considering those who live in the deepest levels of poverty, vulnerability, and exclusion.
The history of SDGs Academia started in the spring of 2019 in Iloilo City Philippines. Kobayashi (CEO) of NGO Love Our Own Brethren Inc.(LOOB) and Igarashi (CEO) of With the World Inc.(WTW) who have been active in the industry for nearly 20 years, decided to embrace the Sustainable Development Goals as a powerful advocacy platform to align the objectives of their programs. Until another partner, Green International Technical College (GITC), an English Language School, decided to join the team.
Why these 3 decided to collaborate? In recent years, there has been increasing opportunities for young people to be connected with overseas and learn English language. However, they saw that there are few programs that educate and bind people in the global arena to strengthen the ability to tackle the social and environmental issues as an urgent matter.
Each of them having a unique strength in the field of Education and International Cooperation decided to merge and take advantage of creating “the SDG Academia” wherein LOOB as venue for international volunteering professionals, WTW Inc. having a proven track record in connecting youth from opposite side of the world using the framework of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and lastly GITC as a language institution with expertise in giving English education.
Respective strengths made the SDGs Academia Program possible. It was defined as;
"SDGs Academia, a global education platform for learning the SDGs in English and nurturing the next generation."
The Programs were designed to bring out the logical thinking, skill and social actions of participating students with the following three steps;

I loved so many things about my experience as a Filipino volunteer. I really enjoyed the one-day Fair Trade. I get to be immersed in different socio-cultural settings and I was able to meet amazing and interesting people that are rich sources of their own culture. This is truly an opportunity that others need to experience as well.

SDGs tour (Jan 2020)Things such as poverty in developing country are normal problems to KNOW as a Filipino 'cause it's an everyday topic of a sort. But experiencing it first hand and on the spot is a different thing. I'd say my experience with LOOB's program opened my eyes on the real time situation of my surrounding. Lessons on SDGs are something each and every one should know. Information as such are the very first step to progress, and progress leads to success.

With the WorldBeing able to immerse myself into the Filipino culture and given the chance to work alongside such passionate and positive people was an opportunity I was so grateful to be given. Working closely with people from such different cultures taught me important lessons on how to better myself as a person, and the work we did in education and promoting sustainable livelihood gave me experiences I was able to reflect on and enable me to grow as a person.
